FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Scottish Pipe and Drum Music,
preview of Annual Scottish Games, Set for August 2nd
Free and open to public
(Tulsa, Okla.) In the rich Scottish tradition of the TATTOO at Edinburgh Castle, bagpipe and drum bands from several states will entertain during a free event open to the public on Saturday evening at 6 pm, August 2nd, at Veterans Park in Tulsa, Okla.
The annual Tulsa TATTOO is a musical spectacular previewing the musical competition portion of the Oklahoma Scottish Games, one of the largest Scottish festivals in the Southwest. This year’s Oklahoma Scottish Games are set for September 20-21 at Chandler Park in Tulsa. During the games, pipe and drum bands travel from several countries and states to compete.
TATTOO derived from the Scottish expression, “Taps Too,” when soldiers playing pipes and drums players strolled through streets at night to tell bartenders to close the pubs and push the beer “taps too.” It was the traditional way that the townspeople and soldiers knew the day had ended and it was time to retire. Today the traditional music and pageantry are remembered in TATTOOs around the world.
The Tulsa Pipe and Drum Band hosts the annual event which, this year, includes the Ozark Highlanders from Arkansas, the North Texas Caledonians, the 95th Division Army Band from Oklahoma City, the Kilties from Springfield, Mo; and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol.
The Tulsa band wears the Tulsa tartan designed with colors representing the distinctive features and influences of Tulsa and Green Country: the red is for Native Americans, the blue represents area lakes and rivers, green is for Green Country, and the black represents black gold (oil and petroleum).
